Julie, your comment is so perfect. So many owners - especially SHIBA owners it seems - give up on socialization when they run into a roadblock. You managed to work around the roadblock though and that's great. Thanks for sharing!

I have had some challenges to socializing Tierce with other dogs. When he was a puppy, I would take him to the dog park, but when he was around 10 months old, the hormones started raging and he began becoming pushy and aggressive towards other dogs. Instead of waiting until something serious happened, I thought it better to stop letting him run in the dog park.

However, I didn't want him to be totally excluded from canine interaction. He is fine with female dogs, so we allow him access to them when the opportunity arises. We still walk past the dog park and allow him to meet the other dogs through the fence, which seems to act as a buffer to aggressive behaviour on Tierce's part.

I think socialization is still necessary when it becomes clear that a dog is intolerant of certain demographics of the canine clan; it just needs to be carefully monitored so that a dog doesn't get into the habit of being aggressive around other dogs.
