How awesome your dogs got to go after the Lure! It's sooo much fun, I wish I had enough space to build my own course. That was the first time I had ever seen my Shibas so worked up. Mine really enjoyed it when they got to try it with the local JRT club on their practice. The course was the full box and keyhole shape and they were exhausted after a few runs. I checked around in my area, and most clubs offer fun days and practices where non sight hounds can do runs. Also, when AKC has trials/shows, the clubs often offer fun runs for non sight hounds at the event. It is pretty much that simple. Dr. Harvey said that every protein source has different amino acids, so it’s best to switch the proteins that you use. I have been making Snick and Seeky’s food almost exclusively with salmon or tuna for the past few years, but I’m going to start using beef, chicken and lamb also.

Hey there – if you find a good lure course that allows non-sight hounds, I’d like to try running Kaiser on it. He’s got such an incredible prey drive. Our friend, a NYC detective and K9 trainer, was amazed at the focus Kaiser has when I’m working with him and he’s completely driven by wanting to run down and “kill” his ball. I think a lure course would be fantastic for him.

Keep me updated and maybe Kaiser and Snick can visit at the same time.

Hey, Jenna, can you explain more about the protein rotating? Is it just as simple as it sounds? If you’ve been feeding chicken, switch out for beef or lamb every once and a while?

I’m trying hard to find somewhere near here that Snick and I can do it on a regular basis. Snick LOVED it and it would be such great exercise for him. I want so much for him to live forever… anything that helps make him happy and healthy is A Good Thing.

I started my search by contacting the American Sighthound Field Association. Even though Shibas aren’t sighthounds and don’t quality to participate in ASFA or AKC sanctioned events, the ASFA has been very helpful. Thankfully they seem to understand that the sport is appealing to other breeds also.

Yes, it is an annual event. This was only the second year and I expect it will get better each year. It’s in the middle of farm country, but the event is worth the trip. We had a GREAT time and will definitely go again.

Oh, Snick, Shimi is SO jealous. I haven’t found a lure course near Saint Louis, although I’m wondering why and thinking I need to look harder. I know Shimi would love it so much. They have a need for running that long walks just don’t fill no matter how tired they get, IMO.

Get post Jenna! Do they have this Fido Festival every year? Sounds interesting, I would like to go next time. Love, love your recount of Snickers day doing the Lure course. Sounds like he (and you) had a great time! Always good to hear about the adventures of Snick the Dog!
