Wow, she sure had a long life. It’s good that you gave her the best of care in her last days. I’m sorry for your loss. :(

What a sad day, indeed. After a perfect weather weekend, she is now free to be a young spirit again. I send hugs to you from afar. I know it’s hard to deal with… anything I can do, just ask. Know that you did everything you could and beyond. She thanks you for that. I’m pleased that she was able to have a special time in the end of her life and that she was able tp go before the move. Thinking of you…

Thanks for all you have done for her. Recently I myself lost one of my cats who had been always by my side for more than 21 years. We all know that this is unavoidable and we have to be strong enough to deal with this. However, when the day comes, we realize that there was nothing we could prepare for this pain. I really appreciate for what you and your family did for the sweet little girl. I am sure she is smiling at you from above.

Jenna,

I am so sorry for you, your daughter, and pack. I know this is a great loss for you all. But I am so glad that you all gave Ms. Brandywine so much love in her end times. I have loved her from afar ever since I saw her face, which I think is one of the sweetest senior shiba faces I have ever seen. Bless all of you for all you did for her. I’ve no doubt she returned all that love as best she could. Hugs to you all.

I was too upset earlier today to write much, so I thought I’d fill in a few details now… Brandy had been doign really well on the steroids and antibiotics, but she stopped eating on Saturday and was clearly unhappy and uncomfortable. (The tumor in her mouth had gotten REALLY large and was infected and inflamed.) Once she stopped eating, we couldn’t get her antibiotics or steroids into her and she declined really quickly. This morning, she didn’t want to get out of bed and, when she did, she couldn’t walk a straight line. She drank some water but she still wouldn’t eat. She’d reached the point where there wasn’t anything else we could do to make her feel better. She didn’t have any happy bounces left in her and we couldn’t stand to watch her starve and waste away. We weren’t ready to let her go, but it was the best thing to do.

Brandy only lived with us for 6 months, unfortunately. We adopted her after her person died and she was dumped in a shelter.

Jenna, ultimately true love means doing what is best for those we love and not ourselves. Although it is terribly hard to have to make that decision, it was best for her. We are the ones who continue to suffer, they are at peace. She was so fortunate to have someone like you come into her life. Our furbabies ask so little of us, food for their tummies, lots of love and time to speak up for them, when they cannot do so themselves. Sending you hugs and your daughter hugs.

I’m sorry for your loss. This reminds me of Shassi, who was born in 1993 and died in 2010 – a little younger than Brandy, but pretty old for a Shiba for all of that.

What I really loved about this story is that an old, old dog got to live out her last days in a loving home, surrounded by all the support and care that could be given. So many live their last days alone and frightened and in pain, it’s good to know that Brandy didn’t.

Jenna, my heart was broken when I read this post, but I’m glad that Brandy got to spend the last part of her life with someone as caring as you (and snick!). I’m sure you’ll never forget that face of hers, I know I won’t =)

I’m so glad you had the time you had with her, even if it was fleeting. She was very much loved and an old girl like her was probably quite invigorated by the attention.

You gave her graceful, loving way out of this world and into the next. May the road rise up to meet Brandy and may your hearts not be too heave for too long.

*hugs*

I’m so sorry for your family’s loss, Jenna. Brandy was a lucky dog to have found you at a time when she needed someone special, and I know you feel lucky to have shared in this part of her life. We try to adopt the older animals, too, and it’s such a double-edged sword, but the good memories always eventually outweigh the sadness.

Jenna, while we feel sorrow in the passing of Brandy we also feel joy in her long life and the love you gave her in her last days. It is never easy having to make the choice of putting a pet down and on more then one occasion we have had to carry that burden. You have done a wonderful job with this group and your taking in an older shiba like Brandy truely shows what a kind and caring person you are. I hope some day you will be able to pass thru our area so we can meet you. You really are a special person. From myself, Thea, Roxy and Jinx, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Jenna, so many people have beaten me to the punch and said it so well. We will never know how much excitement Brandy was able to experience in her long life, but I believe she is leaving a legacy behind created in just a short six months. That legacy is the attention she brought forth to so many people in recognizing that “even” old dogs have so much worth. I believe your adoption of Brandy has also changed the minds of many folks who would not have adopted an older or geriatric adult. “Its all good” The whole gang here is grateful for the love and attention you and your family gave to this ole soul. God Bless.
