Murphy is a little lover. Whenever he can, he will get on the couch and curl up nearby. I usually scoop him up and “make” him snuggle with me when I’m watching TV. I say “make” because he only does the “I am Shiba. No want snuggles,” for about 3 seconds (and very half-heartedly at that) and then he settles in for a snuggly nap.

Murphy napping on my leg. Snickers in the background.

He’s learned really quickly to settle down in his crate and go to sleep at night. The crate is right by my bed. He whimpers a bit, but then he’s fine. When I wake up in the morning, he’s very sweet about waiting till I get out of bed and let him out and then he’s VERY ZOOMY! 🙂

I think he’s completely house trained. He hasn’t had an accident in the house since a few days after he got here. During the day, he goes outside every 5 or 6 hours, but at night he’s inside for 10 to 12. When we wake up, he plays, eats breakfast, waits for me to get my coat and THEN goes outside, without any issues.

He’s learning rules really quickly. He takes food VERY nicely. He does NOT beg. He sits for treats, because the other dogs do it, but I haven’t taught him to sit on command yet. He knows he is allowed on the couches, but not on the bed (or the dining room chairs, which he jumped on a couple times the first day or two). He’s learned to take turns with the other dogs when I’m handing out goodies and he’s learning what “wait” and “I’ll be right back” mean!

That’s all of the new news I can think to share about Murphy. Someone adopt him soon. Please! 🙂

Yes, somebody please adopt Mr. Murphy! Soon, please, before I decide that he’s not leaving. He and Drummer have become best buddies and they have a great time playing together, but if we keep another dog then we can’t foster any more (five is pretty much our household dog limit) and not being able to foster would be sad.

(Oh, and if somebody happened to be close enough to Indy that we could still see him occasionally, that would rock too…)

Hey Michelle. You mean Murphy, right? (Cz, Snickers, he’s MINE!!!) 😛

Murphy gets along great with other dogs! You can read more about Murphy here.

Jenna – LOL I would never take snickers…a big whoops on my part! My husband and I are thinking of a 2nd dog but we have a VERY ALPHA 9 yuear old female and given what I know (what Janet has told me) about Shibas I am not sure they would be a good match – also I am not sure my husband would let me adopt another dog without meeting them first….our first dog Marley is great but we have certainly had had soem trying times with her as we adopted her not havin gmet her (or knowing her real energy level!)

    So…… resisting the urge.

Plus, Phoenix really isn’t close to you all. =)

Michelle – Where do you live? Murphy is not the typical Shiba (yet) with other dogs. He seems to get along with every human and dog that he meets!

Maura – You know, for you, I would make an exception!!! But you already HAVE a puppy arriving in a few weeks!

aw, phooey. I had a feeling you were going to say Massachusetts! Nope, not planning to be there any time soon. lol

Oh I live far far away in the land of Massachusetts! My resuce dog Marley is a 9 year old female who can be quite alpha on her own and I would worry about putting her with a Shiba. We would have to have any dog we adopt “meet” Marley first so as much as I think Murphy is a sweetheart – he probably won’t work out – unless you are planning a tour to Massachusetts!

Awwww.. Thank you, Jenna! Even if i weren’t “expecting”, i think Murphy would do better in a home where someone is either home more or works closer to home.

He is beautiful though… and I know that Snick and Secret are showing him the ropes. =) He’s a lucky boy!

I do think Murphy needs a home with an older Shiba to keep him company. One with a lot of patience! 😛

What an adorable shiba. Pong does the same thing where she goes ‘ah.. i’m too lazy to resist but just to let you know, I’ll remember this.’

I wish I had the vacation time and money to drive east! Murphy’s personality would mesh great with Ms. Sumi- who, incidentally, has developed some even better manners dealing with the new kitten, who is oblivious to Shiba Superiority. 🙂

Oh I am tempted… Murphy sounds just about what we are looking for in a second Shiba. I have a very alpha 4 year old female- would they get along? Willow seems to want a buddy some of the times & then at other times- she seems to like to be an “only child”. That is my only concern.
We live in Seattle- so that is too far for you visit….
We are also considering Damon (of Tim Horton’s fame) from the midwest rescue- but hesitate for the same reasons.
Email me and we can discuss the possibilites.
